Yule is coming

Ok, thought this would be the ideal chance to start seeing how we all view the wonderful sabbat of Yule ;)

I know I tend to reflect up on it as a time of balance and also the time where we really do see the wonders of the harvests that went before. You have the age old stories of such things as the Holly and Oak kings and not to mention the wonderful kids stories that reflect the meaning. We all see the winter and to many its a time of hardship, the times where we have to survive on what we have reaped from the year past. Maybe that's a good way of viewing it, a time of reflection, a season where we all come together in times of need.

I know this isn't what every person would view Yule as, but its just one perspective amoung millions. So with that I put this out there to everyone, what is Yule to you?

I see it as a time of gathering everyone together, and putting aside old differences .

Well, as I don't really celebrate Yule (or Christmas for that matter!), for me as an outsider looking in, I think Yule would seem to represent people comming together (community/family), conditions this time of year in the past would have been harsh, so that side of things makes sense to me. Also a time of reflection and hope, looking back on the past year (the past crop and harvest?) and also looking to the future (hopes of a good crop in the coming year?), so it is a time of looking back on the year and all it's things, good and bad, and also hopes for the future.

I also like to think of Yule as a time of welcoming nature into your home, as it seems to get more barren outside we decorate our homes inside with nature.

Yeah totally M; the tradition of bringing greenery into the house when everything appears to be dying off is a real morale booster and to be honest I think that's why Yule has the importance attatched to it that it does. Midwinter back in the day would have been grim to say the least, and what better way of combating the depression that must inevitabley set in, than to have a massive party bang slap in the middle of it? I should imagine they made a huge deal out of the fact that it's the solstice, which means the days from then on out are getting longer, which in turn means that they should be able to think about planting again soon. This train of thought obviously leads to placating the various gods and goddesses with sacrifices and such and that always has to end in a party doesn't it?!

It pretty much means the same to me. Each year I struggle to keep depression at bay as I suffer with SAD. This year has been so much easier so far, purely because it's been sunnier. So, for me I really look forward to the Winter Solstice as a marking of the year. It's the day when the sun starts to come back. It's also exactly 6 months until my birthday, born as I was, on the Summer Solstice. Plus it's when I plant my Garlic.

In terms of celebrations; we have two kids so we kinda have to do the thing. It also means that we can have our own feast day every year, without treading on any family toes. Always a bonus! :D

So yeah. That's us. Freinds, Family and Food. But not necessarily in that order. :D

I don't know what I will be doing this year. I usually submerge my home in tacky decorations, spend a small fortune on presents and generate quite a few hangovers.

This year I think I will decorate my home in a more natural way and I've decided just to buy presents for the children I know. I hope to spend Yule with my favourite Welsh people and then I'll maybe spend a few days lounging around in my pj's at my parents house and eating my Mum's great food, watching tv and trying to deal with the aftermath brussels sprouts causes in my Dad and brother

As for the hangovers, I don't seem to be able to handle them so well any more so I might go easy on the gin. Or maybe not.

Well my home has some small decorations lol, just a tree and some lights here and there. To be honest I sort of like it but something tells me I'm going to be going all out next year to make a more natural looking decor for this humble little flat.

Anyway onto my reason for posting, I'm wondering how many of you actually do things like this. Every single Yule I tend to pop into the forest that we stay in for open circles. I go armed with rich foods like honey and even peanut butter. What I do is spread these things around various tree's and points on the ground to give the animals that are still active some much needed energy.

Its nothing major, but it does help more survive the harsh winter, and I have a feeling we are in for a cold one this year so they may well need it.

So do you guys do anything similar?

Sadly, no I don't do things like that :(

As an alternative I could put things in the garden, to feed up any visiting birds etc, but I don't get that many birds in my garden because I have a cat, and for their own safety I don't think I should start trying to entice them in! But there are parks not that far away from me, only a 20 minute walk in either direction, so I could do something similar there.

Thanks for the idea and motivation!!!
