Samhain Crafts

Postby Wolfsong on Wed Sep 05, 2007 6:23 am

With Samhain just around the corner, I thought I might start out with some Samhain crafting ideas.

A bit about Samhain...
The witch's New Year. A time for harvesting, bringing the cattle in for the winter months, to reflect upon the last twelve months and resolve anything left unresolved. Once we do that we can look forward to the coming New Year. Samhain, October 31 also known as Halloween or All Hallow's Eve is a time when the veil between our world and the 'other side' is thinnest and and communication with perhaps our ancestors or someone that has passed over recently is the greatest.

Jack O Lantern Pinata

Supplies:

Large Round Balloons (make a few to hang!)
Orange Crepe paper (any crafting store)
Colored construction paperWhite School Glue
Tape
Lots of candy! (I like chocolate!)

Cover a large round balloon with newspaper strips dipped in a mixture of white school glue. You can buy this inexpensively at any dollar store. Glue a layer of crepe paper. Let dry completely. Cut out eyes, nose and mouth and glue on with the construction paper. Cut a hole and fill with candy.

Hang the pinata(s) from a tree and have the kids break it open blindfolded using a baseball bat. (remember to keep the other kids away from the swinging bat, lol)

You can also use this idea for other holidays as well changing the look as appropriate. I remember making things like this using this paper mache' process as a kid. You can use this process to make other things as well such as bowls, cups, etc.

Have fun!
Goddess Blessings!
