Pregnancy and Oils?

Postby Cadno ap annwn on Sat Nov 24, 2007 3:55 pm

Now I'm not Mr Wonderful when it comes to knowing oils, to be honest I'm a simple gent, if it works I use it lol. But I'm wondering are there any oils you should really avoid during pregnancy?

I know that Lavender can be dangerous to some women as it is a natural muscle relaxant and we can see the problem there. But are there any others?

About time I got some extra education

Now you mention it what about oils for Mum and baby after birth too? Oils for calming, for baths, for skincare, nappy rash, cracked nipples, etc.

Take extra care when using oils during your pregnancy as some oils can be hazardous. It is best to either consult a qualified aromatherapist, or your doctor, and keep your midwife informed of what you are using etc. These oils are what I used for all my pregnancys, yup 6 sons, but 5 pregnanacys, i had twins! LOL. but just coz They were safe for me, don't mean they are for you, so check before using any is always best. Avoid using any at all during your 1st trimester and dilute your blends to half their ususal amounts using a vegetable based carrier oil.

Some oils may be harmful, such as Juniper, thyme, hyssop, clary sage, cinnamon, clove, marjoram, sage, jasmine and myrrh.

Vapourisers are safe though, as there is no contact with the skin, so its not all doom and gloom and hard work figuring them all out. Vapourising a few drops of your chosen essentail oil in a burner is a safe and effective way to use the oils during your pregnanacy, as it provides all the fragrant benefits of the oils without any of them touching your skin. During the early stages, or as i like to call it, your *blooming* stage, lol we tend to get tired and fed up very easily with the journey to work, or school drop offs, or even the local shopping trips! Useing a vapouriser in your car with Mandarin, or maybe Rosemary will help to elevate the stressed out feelings we get. If you use public transport, then a tissue inhalation method can be used.

Spearmint:
Spearmint is a much milder and sweeter alternative to peppermint, and can be used to help combat the feelings of the dreaded morning sickness, yup we hate that girls right?

Rose:
Used with bathing, it is calming and grounding, and combines well with Lavender and geranium.

Patchouli:
This oil helps with the water retention and combats selling of your ankles and feet, and helps keep you regular as well. Constipation, another joy of preganancy, men got it made aint they! LMFAO.

Lavender:
This is a very versatile oil as it is cooling, balancing and calming. Vapourise to help combat tirednes.

Ylang Ylang:
Great for getting rid of them anxiety before and after labour. It's a warming and sensous oil, and is said to promote maternal bonding.

Geranium:
This clever little oil helps releive water retention, piles and them pesky varicose veins.

Frankincense:
Add this oil to your massage blends, and it will help reduce your stretch marks.

Mandarin:
This oil will help with the dreaded morning sickness, and with flatulence. Everyone hates that bloated feeling, and it is worse when pregnant aint it girls!
