What woods did you use to make the besom?

Ummm, not sure! LOL. The end came from an evergreen in my garden, and I found the 'body' strolling through the forest near me :)

Fantastic, the reason is depending on tradition there are certain woods used to make the besom. Yours looks so well made I thought it might have been done in one of these traditions.

The fact it isn't and looks so amazing is a good way illustrate that with a little time and effort anyone can make a fantastic ritual tool.

Thank you Glenn for sharing :)

Wow, thanks :D The way I see it, is that (especially with Ritual tools) if you aren't going to give it your full 100%, then I don't think it should be done at all!

Any chance that you have a sort of rough guideline for people interested in making a besom?

Sometimes its helpful to see how somebody else made one in order to do it yourself. I know I would as believe it or not I'm terrible at making things lol. I think someday I need to get off my backside and start carving again :)

Well, the only thing I'd say is . . . . . .

* If you like a straight shaft, then go with that, but sometimes a crickety shaft has more personality.

* Make the actual length of the 'shaft'/handle the same height as you are

* Cover the shaft in sealant. Lightly if you want a natural effect, or darker like mine.

* With the bristles. I took mine from my evergreen in my garden. They were already dry, but I left them indoors to dry a little more. You wanna get quite a lot to begin with.

* Then, cut (using your Boline, scissors or sheers) all the bristles at the top so they are all need and flat.

* Then, get your smallest, and cut all the others to the same size. Try and get them quite big, so they'll all be big after cutting them.

* Then its just a matter of tying them to the shaft after its dried. This can be kinda frustrating, but persevere. Its easier if you put them all on, and then tie elastic bands around them and string, and then tie string tightly about two to three inches from the top of the bristles.

* You can use anything to tie everything together, but I used twine. Try not to overlap the lines, either. This hasn't got any other purpose apart from aesthetics :)
ww
* Then, according to your Tradition or Path, cleanse, bless/charge, and consecrate it. I still personally haven't done any of that to mine yet, because it's for decorative purposes at the moment, but I am considering changing this opinion soon!

I made my about five/four years ago now for a Hallowe'en party. My Dad wanted to throw it out, but I strictly said no!

Sorry if some the English is a hit and miss here, but I'm typing this while having a conversation, listening to music, and listening to my Mam and her friends talking  :P
