Merry Meet All...
I recently became a huge fan of the show "Charmed" and fell in love with their BOS, (Book of Shadow).
I love how they made the pages look like old antique parchment paper...so I set out to create my own antiquing looking pages.
After many different trials and errors, I finally nailed it!
You can use any kind of paper. I used plain old lined loose leaf paper...and also, printing paper right out of my printer....
I first hand write the spell, ritual, or what ever it is that you are adding to your BOS...I use a pen first, (or if you don't trust yourself at writing neatly at first, you can use a pencil, so you can erase mistakes...). Then I start the antinquing process.
I use water color paints. Usually the basic colors I use to give the page an toscan look of tan, or beige.... I use neutral colors of brown, black, white, yellow, a hint of red.....all shades of brown.
First wet the entire page. (don't saturate it, just use a wet sponge and wipe the paper).
Then start at the ends...what I do is tear away at the ends, (to make the page look worn and old)...I take a stiff small paint brush and dip it first in water and then I dip it into the black color paint....wipe excess paint off of the brush with a paper towel, then start by darkening the ends of the tear off paper...(turn your brush to it's side and approach the paper's ends on the sides....)...keep doing this all around all edges of the paper...and then rinse off brush, and dip next into the darkest brown color...and start painting the out border of the paper, working your way to the middle. You want the middle of your paper, where your writing is to be the lightest color. It may take you a few attempts to get your technique down. Never over wet the brush with loads of paint....always wipe the extra off with a paper towel also blot your paper frequently as you are painting it to lift the excess water.............you need to thing the paint down with water, so you have literally a watered down water color, so it won't go on the paper Opaque....it will go on clearer.......
Always blend the colors starting from the darker color on the outer border of the paper, working towards the middle with lighter colors....
I then use a hair blower on medium setting to dry the paper quickly. Once the paper is dried, it will have a "chalky" feeling to it. I then re-write over my words that I had orginally wrote out on the paper before painting..(I usually dress up the words by using Calligraphy. You can use Calligraphy pens/markers, or just adlib it.).....with a very fine pointed black permanent marker...this will make your words pop......Once I'm done tracing each word with the marker you can either leave as is, or if you want to protect the paper, you can paint on a thin layer of Decoupage glue...(or even basic white glue like Elmers that dries clear will do)...or you can put the page in plastic sleeves.
As suggested, you should use a Loose leaf notebook, (a binder notebook) for you BOS...so this way you can easily add/remove pages.....
I use subject divider also to separate different subject writings.....
I decorated my BOS loose leaf notebook with wallpaper........I went to my local home decor store that sells wallpaper, and asked if they had any sample books for wallpaper that they no longer stock....you'd be amazed on how many books I got for free, and how beautiful these new wallpapers are. I have one book of sample paper that looks as if it is ceramic....old world tuscan style paper..(my favorite style by the way...I love anything with the "Old World" look to it). I hot glued the paper on the cover of my book, and it really came out so nice. I also lined the inside cover, and created pockets.
I have a lot more crafty Ideas, and I will hopefully take more time out in the future to post them...but for now, I think I spoke enough......lol.......I've got to run to the store now and start dinner.
Please let me know if you try any of these idea I wrote and let me know how it turned out...or if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me............
Blessings,
Michelle
