Some more suggestions in making your own candles

Postby scorpiongoddess on Sun Dec 02, 2007 6:20 pm

Merry Meet all.

I have been making candles for years...way before they became a "fad"...and before I started following the path of bei ng a Witch.

I got tired of throwing away all those candles that burned down and left behind so much wax. Especially the fragrant ones. I would melt the wax in a tephlon coated sauce pan, and in mixing different fragrant candle waxes that were left over, I created many new fragrances...pretty cool.

What I do is re-use the container in which the original candles came in. Ex:those little glasses that the Glade candles come in, or pretty much any container....I used bowls, and put three wicks in...I usually by wick at the hobby store. I've never used regular string dipped in wax. I am not too sure how it would burn.

Quick hint:
If you need to fragrance your house quickly, like lets say you have company coming over, and you want your house to smell as if you burn fragrant candles all day, every day.....take the left over pieces of fragrant candles, (or even a new fragrant candel), and melt it in your sauce pan on a very low flame....as it melts down, it breaks up the fragrant molecules and puts fragrance in the air. As soon as the wax is melted down, turn up the flame, and bring it too just a boil...quickly remove from heat.....take your pot and walk from room to room....the wax should be smoking at this point, emitting fragrance into the air.
The smell will last for days in your home..(provided you don't have every window open...lol)......It's a really quick way to utilized fragrant candles, and get a quick air fix...

There is one more trick you can do.

If you don't feel like melting your wax down...take all the left over pieces of candles you have left....use a hand shredder (a cheese shredder), and shred the candles down to tiny pieces.....take a container in which you want to use to burn the candle. Pour the pieces of wax in the bowl almost to the top...then just stick you wick in the middel..(it will stand on it's own)...oh yeah, after pouring the pieces of wax in the bowl....compress with your hand, just to compact the wax pieces together a bit...then put your wick in. Light the wick, and the candle will burn, and burn slower than a regular candle. It will melt the candle down as it burns....

any more ideas, just ask me...or if you have any great suggestions, please let me know...

Oh yeah one more thing....in reference to put hot wax into molds, and worrying about getting the candle out when it's dry....there is a neat way of making sure it comes out and also adding fragrance to your candle.

Before you pour your hot wax into the mold, coat the mold with any fragrance oil.......(just like if your were buttering a can pan).....this way when you pour your wax in it will not stick to the mold as it dries. It should slide out with no problem, and it will also now be coated with fragrance.

If it doesn't come out easily, take the mold, (can, etc...) and dip it in very cold water...give a few taps around the sides, and it should slide out easy..

Ok, I've talked enough now..LOL..........Have a fantastic day, and an even better tomorrow!

Blessings,
SCORPION GODDESS

Thankyou so much for the great advice!!!

I know what you mean about taking it up before other things, the funny thing for me is I started having a go at making candles well before I discovered the Pagan within :)

Had one of those past times kits with everything you need to make voltive and floating candles. I suddenly have an urge to post up a pic of the box to get all nostalgic lol.

One tip I loved is the coating with oil and the cold water to get them out. One of my biggest problems has always been getting the pesky things out in one piece. Well ok the candle comes out ok, the mould dies a horrible twisted plastic death.

Thankyou so much for posting this up Scorpion Goddess :)

Fab tips SG.

I made a candle at last! It was for my Mum as a Boat warming present and she was so chuffed. I have to say that I was pretty surprised at how many 'ends' of tealights it took to make one candle tho. I just left it white and attatched some lovely rose patterned ribbon with a (carefully placed) bow on the front and it looked really effective. Thanks peeps for all hints tips and thoughts.

Well when you do let me and Crystalwitch know, we'll come down and do some at the same time ;)

Might be worth digging out some of my old stuff aswel, maybe candle making can distract me from the dreaded nicotine monster :)

Gel Candles

Postby Lynx on Mon Dec 10, 2007 1:55 am

I make gel candles. I found them to be easier for me to make. They require a higher heat than Paraffin Candles. Here in the states, they suggest when you are using Paraffin wax that you use a double boiler instead of placing your pan on direct heat. I can’t find one so I went to using the Gel wax which I can use on direct heat. I love how it looks, and how it is “mistake-proof”. I had lots of problems with pouring my Paraffin Candle where they looked right with out the “line” when doing the 2nd pouring. I am currently doing Gel Candles that look like various jellies and jams.

Yeah... been away a while so only just getting back to thread...!
The double boiler isn't a problem, as I said previously if you place your container of wax in a saucepan of boilibg water it works great. You might need to reheat the water in the pan as it cools, but it's not really itself on direct heat (and you could always transfer tin of wax to a previously boiled pan you have just removed from heat). Fab recycling!!!
Am planning a mega boil up of all the left over bits from the past few months during this holiday!
Have just dried some rose petals to add around the sides of mould so they'll be on outside of candle, like some you can buy. Just wondering if anyone has any advice about safety/flammability of this, I'm assuming if candle is wideish, and side decoration not in contact closely with wick or central portion of candle, it will be ok? If you don't hear from me for another few months again, I might have burned the house down!!!! :D

lol.

I've got loads of endy bits that I need to sort out but I keep forgetting to go to the craft market in town to get my wicks.

I used some string soaked in melted wax last time but I ended up having to dip the end in water after I'd blown it out and it was still smouldering. :? I don't think it's meant to do that!

Hehehe.

Wood Wicks

Postby Lynx on Wed Apr 09, 2008 4:09 pm

I was in a store not too long ago and saw them selling candles with wooden wicks. It said that they give off the sound of a crackling fire. I was wondering if anyone here had heard of them?

No, never heard of them, but that would be fantastic for people who were doing a Beltane ritual. Some of us don't have the luxery of the outdoors and a good old Bel Fire. But something like that set on an altar would give a lovely ambience.

This is a site where you can buy the wicks. I plan on ordering some very soon. I want to try them for the candles I am doing for my friend's metaphysical shop.
