Boline ... Athame ... aren't they the same thing?

Why does an athame only cut the air? What is the difference between a pentagram and a pentacle? Well find your answers here and discuss the subtle differences we encounter.

Boline ... Athame ... aren't they the same thing?

NO!!!! They are NOT the same thing. Please don't use your Boline for an Athame and vice versa!

The Athame (ritual blade) is a religious tool. It is used for various ceremonial tasks including to draw the magick circle and to store and direct energy. The two edges of the athame symbolize balance. The blade represents the power of mind and/or Will, and is used symbolically for directing them. Since the Athame is sacred, it is never used for cutting. They are also beautiful to look at, and simply make a great decor enhancer.

The Boline is a curved sickle shaped blade traditionally used to harvest herbs and grasses. Also used for cutting items during magick ceremonies, unlike the Athame which is never used for cutting in the material plane.

You can use your finger also as an Athame for drawing your circle and other ritual practices. But you should never use your Athame for cutting herbs, and never use your Boline for ritual practice. Remember the most important tools you have are yourself :)

I have an old letter opener that belonged to my now passed over father in law that I use as a ritual Athame. As for a Boline, for now I use a pair of kitchen scissors to cut my herbs until I can find what I am looking for preferably at the local antique shop. Athames and Bolines can be whatever feels right to you but should never be interchanged.

i was found (in writings in my research) that bolines are like a 'preparation' knife, kinda like a kitchen knife but for magical stuff. i always liked that idea. and it appeals to my organisational side. one for herbs and prep, one for ritual.

I tend to think of it as this... boline for cutting and working with physical things, athame for cutting and working with energy.

I agree with you sekhmut. An Athame is strictly for ritual use only. The Boline is for cutting magickal herbs for spells and Kitchen Magick work.

They are two very distinctive blades and not to be confused. I mean even the shape should be enough for you to distinguish  . I do not have one for working in my Kitchen as I have not found one appropiate for me yet.

Brightest Blessings!

That's how I distinguish them too, the athame is to ritual and energy use, the boline to physical use such as cutting herbs, cords or ribbons, inscribing candles, etc. Some like to have the athame black-handled and the boline white-handled.

OMG the amount of times I've heard people say "Pick up your Athame, and cut the [insert here] . . . . " WTF! Do you know nothing!

I've been discussing the use of the Athame with a few fellow Coveners - the discussion was, if a robber came into your house with a weapon, would you use the Athame to defend yourself, and even go as far as cutting them? I said no, and believe that if one has an Athame, one is sure to have a Boline (or scissors) near by.

Thoughts on that?!

Funny enough I believe that the minute you draw blood with any ritual tool it becomes a weapon. So in that light would I use my athame to defend myself...........the answer is yes.

I know I would destroy years of working with it, I would lose all the memories I have with it, but at the end of the day if my life depended on my using it as a weapon then a weapon is what it would become.

I guess in a way I do value my life more than a tool that in my tradition is an extension of your mind, so if I lost my life it would be a dead tool.
