Altar decoration

Postby Freyja on Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:33 pm

I'm looking for ideas on making an altar decoration, a representation of Thor. I have representations for Odin & Freya and I would like to handmake some sort of plaque or statue for Thor. If any of you have done something similar give me some ideas please?

Gods this is an area I need practise in, I want to make a really nice set of God and Goddess figures for my personal altar. The problem is, I suck at handy crafts and I've never found anything that I would use (ok, partly a lie, there is one, but the museum won't let me borrow it).

One idea I had was to carve it out of wood, but it all depends on the symbolism you are using. Are you thinking a classic romantic type, with Thor as a proud strong man standing sternly. Or are you looking more along the idea of a symbolic representation, perhaps the hammer or even a sigil.

Other materials could be making a rubber mould and using plaster or something. Anyway, I'm interested in ideas aswel, as to be honest its about time I got off my rather large backside and focused on homing some craft skills outside of my everyday craft.

I don't really want a 'romantic type' figure, I could go and buy that. I want to create a plaque with a symbolic representation of Thor.

I'm thinking I might do a mix of paint and collage on a small canvas with various materials. Its got to represent Thor; endurance, strength and protection. I see Thor as a figure of immense strength and protection but he also has a funny side to him, sort of gets himself into funny situations at times. Then he sort of fights his way out :D
